Current Book Project

Editing Culture: How Changing Texts Changes All of Us

Books change the world. Editors change books. They decide which books come into being and which fade from memory; they nudge authors to consider expanding or cutting ideas; they shape manuscripts in voice, pace, depth, and more. As a result, editors influence authors and readers—and ultimately, the choices made in a quiet office or over a phone call or in the privacy of Word’s Track Changes all ripple out to the societal level, where we are all changed.

Despite the seismic forces of editorial activity, little research has studied editing as a cultural influence. Scholars across multiple fields have done invaluable work investigating how texts function, providing insight into publishing industries across time, considering authorial creativity, documenting editorial techniques, and even exploring author-editor relationships. However, none have explored the enduring urgencies of editorial intervention in shaping what we learn and remember, and who we become, at the cultural scale.

In Editing Culture, I tackle these issues from multiple angles. I recover lively stories of the editorial past, share interviews from the editorial present, and bring together up-to-date research to enrich contemporary editorial theory and best practices.

The book is currently in development.
